 | Nice article. I think there are a few eepictxons to what you stated here though. Whilst I agree with your argument about their being no good' or evil' only a lack of ability to empathize and back-room generals' being a key factor in war atrocities this cannot explain events such as the Rwandan genocide where neighbours turned upon neighbours at a grass-roots level with no orders' from above. The effect elite's influencing the population and use of propaganda was undeniable but there was a genuine, historically instilled and indoctrinated sense of hatred of the Tutsi's by the Hutu tribe.Furthermore, in terms of back-room generals', I've recently learnt about the role Hitler played in the holocaust and whilst it was his ideology that was behind the atrocity many people agree that the end result of the mass killings in Auschwitz was due to culminative redicalism'. This is an idea somewhat related to social Darwinism: Hitlers aversion to decision making meant he would be given a set of choices by his generals etc. and simply choose the most radical option (best example is the Nuremburg Laws, supposedly a split second decision of radicalism to please the people as opposed to a carefully thought out, increasingly radical racial policy). This system was used all the way down the ranks until the final solution was reached Hitler came up with the ideology but his generals and their lower ranking officers had some degree of autonomy in how they chose to implement his wishes.And finally, just because rationality says evil' does not exist will not stop people believing it does movements such as fascism are grounded in irrationality and heart over head' mentality meaning their common beliefs, whilst alien to us, are acceptable to them.Sorry this has dragged on somewhat, I'm very tired at the moment so i'm not writing concisely. I've just been studying fascism and previously violence in the 20th century and though your article was interesting and thought I would propose something else for you to have a think about.
